A longtime labor official will try to keep Republican Rep. Bruce Dammeier from winning a second term.
Democrat John Thompson of Edgewood announced his bid for the state House over the weekend, and promptly received the endorsement of the Washington State Labor Council.
That’s no surprise with his resume: He’s a retired business representative for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 286, a former secretary-treasurer of the Pierce County labor council, and a former county Democratic Party chairman.
Democrats are mostly playing defense this year, but they would like to win Dammeier’s seat, the only one they don’t have in the 25th District.
In a news release, Thompson emphasized his status as a Navy veteran and former “Northwood Elementary and Edgemont Junior High PTA dad.” As a union official, he said he worked to ensure safe working conditions.
