Supreme Court’s Chambers to retire; Bruce Hilyer joins Ladenburg in race

Supreme Court Justice Tom Chambers will step down at the end of his term this year, opening the door for John Ladenburg and at least one rival.

King County Superior Court Judge Bruce Hilyer announced today he would seek Chambers’s seat. He and Ladenburg have formed committees to raise campaign money, which they can legally begin Sunday.

A third potential candidate is considering running: former Justice Richard Sanders, who lost his seat in a squeaker in 2010.

Chambers, 68, said Thursday he would not run for a third term.

John Ladenburg drops out of Attorney General race, will instead run for state Supreme Court

He hasn’t seemed all that excited about the attorney general race lately and this must be why.

While he had filed with the Public Disclosure Commission and said he was thinking about a campaign he has made twice before, former Pierce County Prosecutor John Ladenburg said he will shift instead to the Supreme Court.

He did not say which seat on the court he might pursue but a spokesman said he would not file against anincumbent and expects there to be vacancies next year. At least one will be the seat now held by Justice Gerry Alexander …

Former Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg may make another run for attorney general.

Republican Rob McKenna beat out Democrat Ladenburg for the job in 2008, but in 2012 McKenna is widely expected to run for governor, and potential successors are already jockeying for position. Democratic King County Councilman Bob Ferguson recently announced he would run.

Today Ladenburg, the former Pierce County prosecutor and executive, announced he has filed paperwork to form an exploratory committee. He called it “the first step evaluating a potential run.”

He has set up a website, ladenburg.org, and put out a news release:

To find the biggest names in Pierce County politics, you have to go down this year’s ballot — way down.

Rosa Franklin and John Ladenburg were supposed to be on the sidelines this year. But they apparently couldn’t stay away from politics: They’re running for Democratic precinct committee officer in their South End Tacoma home precinct, 29-517.

This will be of big interest to Pierce County politics watchers. Former County Executive John Ladenburg and his wife, former Tacoma City Councilwoman Connie Ladenburg are setting up shop as a downtown government affairs firm offering “direct lobbying, grassroots lobbying and non-profit advocacy.” Staying with the family theme, they will be affiliated with their sons’ law firm. Ladenburg: Cascadia “too big to fail”

In case you missed it, former Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg was in court Tuesday in his new capacity as chief operating officer for Cascadia, the troubled Bonney Lake housing development.

The company is fighting in bankruptcy court to prevent the liquidation of its assets. Cascadia has defaulted on a $75.6 million loan from the bank.

According to today’s story by reporter Mike Archbold, Ladenburg told the court that Cascadia is “too big and too important to Pierce County to be allowed to fail.” County economic development director Denise Dyer offered similar testimony.
