Political Smell Test: Attack mailer on Jack Connelly’s ties to nonprofit’s misspending

A mailer widely distributed to Tacoma residents last week amounted to the first attack ad in what’s now increasingly turning into a negative campaign for the 27th District state senate seat between two Democrats – state Rep. Jeannie Darneille and trial lawyer Jack Connelly.

With only two candidates in the race, both are assured a place on the general election ballot. Yet the campaign already has gone negative, even before the primary.

The mailer in question – distributed independently of Darneille’s campaign by a political action committee called “Tacomans for Integrity in Government” — criticizes Connelly for his ties to misspending of public funds at an affordable housing

UPDATE PDC: Connelly’s campaign Facebook page falsely implies Franklin’s endorsement, but probably isn’t illegal

UPDATE: 10:30 a.m. July 9, 2012

Jack Connelly said this morning the posting of Rosa Franklin‘s photograph on his campaign Facebook page never meant to imply that the former senator was endorsing him.

“I never even saw the picture,” Connelly said.  ”A volunteer did that (posted it), and just feels awful about it.  But there was no intent to imply an endorsement by Rosa Franklin. To be honest we never thought about it, it was just something that happened at a campaign event.”

Attorney Jack Connelly running for state Senate

With 16 months left until November 2012, it’s early to be declaring for the Legislature, but some candidates are already jumping in. The latest is an attorney who has filed some of the region’s most high-profile lawsuits against state government.

Jack Connelly, a North End Tacoma Democrat, announced today he would run for the seat in the state Senate opening up with Debbie Regala‘s retirement in 2012.

Connelly grew up in the area and has been practicing law in Tacoma for 30 years, he said. His targets have included companies, local governments — and the state, which has settled for big, even record-setting amounts.

Most recently, he has filed a claim against the state on behalf of widows of two slain Lakewood police officers, saying the Department of Corrections mishandled the supervision of Maurice Clemmons.

Connelly said his cases “make a difference” and he hopes in the Legislature he “can continue that work,  but can do it on a much broader scale.”

Unlike in 1996, when Connelly ran for the House and lost to Republican Mike Carrell, he is in the solidly Democratic 27th District.

The 27th’s two House members, Reps. Jeannie Darneille and Laurie Jinkins, said they haven’t yet decided on their 2012 plans. Darneille said she believes one of the pair will run for Senate.
