Smell Test: Could Legislature extend income tax to everyone? Yes. Would they? Who knows

WHAT THE ADS SAY: In TV ad after TV ad, opponents of Initiative 1098 have been portraying it as a slippery slope: The income tax may only be on high earners, but the Legislature can extend it to everyone, they say.

It “can be extended to you in just two years,” one says. And a radio ad urges you to “vote no, or you pay an income tax for the rest of your life.”

But a commercial aired recently by the initiative’s supporters says the opposite: “I-1098 can’t be changed without a vote of the people.”

Initiative forum set for Federal Way

If you’re confused about how to vote on all the ballot initiatives this fall, this forum next Tuesday in Federal Way might help. Here are details:

Washington State ballot issues will be discussed on Tuesday, October 12, beginning at 6:30 PM. The meeting will be at the Federal Way Regional Library at 34200 1st Way South.

Speakers from the campaigns for and against each initiative will present arguments. Questions from the audience will be included.

Initiatives to be included are 1082, privatization of industrial insurance; 1098, state income tax; 1100, privatization of liquor sales; 1105, liquor sales; and 1107, repealing

3,000 teacher layoffs? The unfactual factoid that just won’t die

Now it’s the advocates for a high-earner income tax that are using the number that has been refuted by just about everyone who has looked at it.

In the state voters’ guide, the Yes on 1098 committee, led by Bill Gates, II, argues that the new tax would raise badly needed money for education and social services.

Education and health care have been slashed — 3,000 teachers were laid off, 40,000 people lost basic health. With the wealthy paying their fair share, 1098 will net $1 billion annually dedicated to funding K-12, college tuition, the Basic Health Plan and long-term

Gates, Gorton to debate income tax in Tacoma

In this cor-ner retired Seattle lawyer and dunk-tank victim, Bill “Tax-Me” Gates Sr. In the other cor-ner, former United States Sen. Slade Gorton. The two political heavyweights will square off in what is already being billed as “The Great State Income Tax Debate” Oct. 11 at the University of Washington Tacoma.

The subject of course is Initiative 1098, the November ballot initiative that would impose an income tax on higher earners while reducing some other taxes. The event is free, but seating is limited: For tickets, click here.
