Three days before the election Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Inslee and congressional candidate Denny Heck are making another swing through South Sound this afternoon, joined by the state’s two U.S. senators in Tacoma near the end of a 26-stop state “Tour for Jobs.”

The Tacoma stop is at 12:15 p.m. at IBEW Local 76’s hall, 3049 South 36th Ave. State Democrats say the focus is on tax credits and training programs that have put veterans to work. Advocates of the Wild Olympics proposal to add wilderness protections for 126,000 acres of Olympic National Forest land are highlighting a new study arguing the plan won’t reduce the supply of timber or affect logging jobs.

Here’s the study by consultant Stewardship Forestry, which was commissioned by the Wild Olympics Campaign as an update to an analysis of an earlier, more ambitious version of the plan. With some help from his personal checkbook, Bill Driscoll is keeping up with Derek Kilmer.

Both men have just a bit more than $710,000 in the bank in their campaigns for the open 6th Congressional District seat representing Tacoma and the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas.

Driscoll, a Tacoma Republican, filed his first campaign-disclosure reports of the campaign hours after Kilmer’s disclosures came in. They reveal the real-estate executive and Weyerhaeuser descendant Driscoll loaned his campaign $500,000, which he had previously announced, and that he contributed another $20,000.

Now they’re suggesting who should represent the residents within those lines.

Tom Huff, the Redistricting commissioner appointed by the state House Republicans, thinks Jesse Young should be the Republican candidate in the 6th Congressional District.

“I have been watching the race for Congress, and I believe Jesse Young stands out above the crowd,” Huff said in a press release issued by the campaign. “Jesse is a hard worker, has a great vision for our district and country, and will make an excellent Congressman.” Huff is a former state Representative and budget chairman.

State GOP spokesman Josh Amato will leave his job at the state party next week to work as campaign manager for Bill Driscoll, a Tacoma Republican who announced Monday for the 6th Congressional District.

This week another Republican in the race, Gig Harbor’s Jesse Young, brought in Jay Johnson as campaign manager, saying in a campaign news release that Johnson has experience in GOP politics and in the financial services industry.
