PDC rules Tacoma PAC that sent attack mailers against Connelly violated campaign finance law

A Tacoma political group that distributed mailers attacking state senate candidate Jack Connelly last year violated campaign finance law by failing to report its donations and spending in a timely manner, the Public Disclosure Commission ruled Wednesday.

The political action committee known as “Tacomans for Integrity in Government” now has 30 days to pay a $200 fine assessed for the violation.

Ken Miller, a local political activist who chaired the Tacomans PAC, described his group’s belated financial filings on Wednesday as an honest mistake.

“I didn’t dispute the facts,” Miller said in an e-mail. “I misunderstood the

Tacoma: Jack Connelly’s self-funding nearing the $1 million mark in 27th Legislative District race

Tacoma trial lawyer Jack Connelly has now poured $988,383 into his campaign for the 27th Legislative District senate seat against state Rep. Jeannie Darneille, the latest campaign finance records show.

In all, the Connelly campaign’s total contributions — when including about $67,000 in other donations  – have surpassed the $1 million mark.  He has raised $1,065,719 to date — tops among legislative candidates statewide, records show.

Connelly’s camp has also spent almost three-quarters of that money — partly to fund a barrage of TV spots, mailers and other political advertisements in recent weeks that largely attack Darneille’s 12-year record

27th Legislative District Senate race: Connelly, Darneille release new TV spots as campaign ads escalate

Democrats Jack Connelly and Jeannie Darneille each released new TV spots this week, as campaign advertising has escalated in their well-moneyed race for Tacoma’s state senate seat with just over a month to go before Election Day.

Connelly’s TV spot, which aired during Monday Night Football on ESPN this week, features two Tacoma educators who support Connelly and criticizes Darneille for voting “to cut over $4 billion from the education fund.”   The ad cites the last two state operating budgets (and supplemental operating budgets) approved by the Legislature as sources for the claim.

“Tacoma’s kids

“Integrity” PAC behind attack mailers about Jack Connelly in Tacoma’s 27th District state senate race finally submits reports

A political action committee that recently distributed two attack mailers about 27th District senate candidate Jack Connelly‘s ties to an affordable housing nonprofit that misspent public funds has finally submitted its reports to the state’s campaign finance watchdog, records show.

As we’ve reported (here, here and here), the Tacomans for Integrity in Government PAC failed to submit required reports to the state’s Public Disclosure Commission about the mailers’ costs and who funded them. The group’s failure to properly report its activities has drawn several complaints.

Connelly, a Tacoma trial lawyer, has disputed the

NARAL weighs in on 27th District senate race, reminding voters Jeannie Darneille is the only pro-choice candidate

The National Abortion And Reproductive Rights Action League’s political action committee in Washington has distributed a late mailer before Tuesday’s primary, reminding voters in Tacoma’s 27th Legislative District that Democrat Jeannie Darneille is the only pro-choice candidate in the district’s state senate race.

The mailer, which includes Darneille’s photo next to that of Washington’s Democratic candidate for governor, Jay Inslee, lists NARAL’s 10-candidate slate of preferences in legislative, statewide and federal races.

On the flip side, two concerned-looking 20-something women stare out from the mailer next to the plea: ”Vote Pro Choice, because we need leaders we can trust to protect access

Going negative in Tacoma’s 27th District senate race: Another unreported attack mailer about Jack Connelly emerges

A group calling itself “Tacomans for Integrity in Government,” distributed a second mailer this week attacking Tacoma trial lawyer and Democratic senate candidate Jack Connelly for his ties to a housing nonprofit found to have misspent public money.

But the political action committee — made up of supporters for Connelly’s opponent, fellow Democrat and state Rep. Jeannie Darneille – continues to flout state campaign finance law by not reporting contributions and spending to Washington’s Public Disclosure Commission.

“That committee hasn’t filed anything with us,” PDC spokeswoman Lori Anderson said Thursday.

Meantime, Connelly’s campaign last week fired off an attack

UPDATE Tacoma: Chairman of PAC that sent attack mailer about Jack Connelly apologizes for mistakes to PDC

UPDATE: Wed. Aug. 1, 12:32 p.m.

As of today, two people have filed complaints with the state’s Public Disclosure Commission against the Tacomans for Integrity in Government PAC for failing to file required campaign finance reports, PDC spokeswoman Lori Anderson said.

The complaintants include Tacoma resident and Jack Connelly campaign contributor Virginia Douglas, and Olympia lobbyist Jim King Jr.

Anderson said today the PAC still has yet to file its required reports.  The failure continues despite PAC chairman Ken Miller‘s acknowledgment email sent Tuesday (see below), and a PDC staff member’s phone call to Miller, in which Anderson said

Political Smell Test: Attack mailer on Jack Connelly’s ties to nonprofit’s misspending

A mailer widely distributed to Tacoma residents last week amounted to the first attack ad in what’s now increasingly turning into a negative campaign for the 27th District state senate seat between two Democrats – state Rep. Jeannie Darneille and trial lawyer Jack Connelly.

With only two candidates in the race, both are assured a place on the general election ballot. Yet the campaign already has gone negative, even before the primary.

The mailer in question – distributed independently of Darneille’s campaign by a political action committee called “Tacomans for Integrity in Government” — criticizes Connelly for his ties to misspending of public funds at an affordable housing
