As far as closing 3 prisons to meet a 6 percent cut last year, McNeal Island had been planned to close for several years. I know, I have a nephew who worked there and he has said this for several years. Typical government BS to get public sympathy. Don't believe anything this woman or any other Democrat says.

If lawmakers are going to send voters a proposed tax referendum they should also put a constitutional amendment enforcing the four-time voter approved 2/3 vote requirement for tax increases on the ballot (especially since some are already talking about suspending it again and others are suing to have it overturned). The legislative vote for both measures could be clearly framed as not an endorsement of the policies but instead an opportunity for the citizens to decide.

Though not identical, this is similar to what lawmakers said they were doing in 2005 when they placed a constitutional amendment on the ballot to reduce the vote threshold needed for voter approved school levies. At the time several lawmakers said they didn't necessarily support the policy but the voters should have the opportunity to be heard. This would provide voters the opportunity to weigh in on both proposals while finally putting to rest once and for all the debate about the 2/3 vote requirement.

People should never forget that real health depends how well you take care of yourself and not what health insurance you carry but I agree health insurance is important for every one. Search "Penny Health" or online for dollar a day insurance plans.

I changed my state employee coverage years ago from Regence to Uniform Medical because I was not happy with Regence's customer support/service. I was not happy this year when I found out they would be administrating claims for Uniform Medical. I'm sure the state went with Regence to save money--you get what you pay for.

Amber,

Across-the-board cuts would fall across all of state government, not just Corrections. Legally, if Gregoire makes the cuts she must cut every agency the same. Hence the problem for Corrections, which may not be able to afford as big a cut as others.

If the Legislature makes the cuts, it can pick and choose what programs to cut.

If I-1125 isn't passed,I feel you will see a continuation of taking transportation funds and adding that to the general fund. Then when the transportation fund is depleted, the Politicos will tell you that more taxes are needed so the roads can be fixed and the bridges repaired. Then if they get that money, the money collected will again go into the General Fund.Same Old Story.

Why are we just focusing on cutting the corrections department? Why not all the aids and secretaries that work for the state? Why not cut some of the non-important state agency's? Look up how many state funded groups are here in WA and tell me that there is nothing that can be cut! Why don't we just withhold out representatives paychecks? Why not make Christine Gregoire take a HUGE paycut or better yet no more vacations for her or her staff.
