The House will join the Senate this morning at 10:15 for a joint session honoring the life of the late Gov. Booth Gardner.

Gov. Booth Gardner gives a State of the State address to a joint session of the Legislature.

Since his death last Friday, Gardner has been recalled as a reluctant campaigner — and even more reluctant legislative arm-twister — who nevertheless managed to restore lasting Democratic control of the Governor’s Mansion and amass an impressive list of accomplishments over eight years living there.

Nearly every member of the House signed on to a resolution honoring Gardner, which notes his accomplishments both before and after his time as governor:

WHEREAS, After he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, he led the successful 2008 initiative drive for a “Death with Dignity” assisted-suicide law, even though it would not apply to him; and

It might also feature the first mention of Frisko Freeze in the legislative annals:

WHEREAS, He loved the Frisko Freeze in Tacoma and other fast-food outlets, but he was also passionate about physical fitness; and

WHEREAS, Booth Gardner was known for his sly sense of humor, his gregarious nature, his optimism and idealism, and an appeal his hometown newspaper described as “cuddly.”

Elsewhere today, the House Finance Committee gets an 8 a.m. briefing on the taxation related to marijuana legalization, and hears testimony on a measure proposing to add more taxes on legal pot to pay for health research.
