Count City Councilman Ryan Mello and former state Senate candidate Jack Connelly among prominent Tacomans who’ve been hacked.

During a rash of social media hackings in recent days, Twitter accounts for both Mello and Connelly have been tweeting direct messages to followers that contain links to so-called “phishing” sites designed to trick people into relinquishing personal and financial information.

The suspect tweets from @RyanMello and @ConnellyJack  seem personal in nature, directing recipients to a link with a question: “Did you see this pic of you? lol.” mello's hacked tweet

But the attached link ends up taking unsuspecting followers on a phishing trip.

Mello has yet to return a call today seeking comment about his hacked account, but Connelly sent The News Tribune an email saying hackers have infiltrated more than just his Twitter account.

“I received a number of calls today about both my Twitter and Facebook account being hacked,” Connelly wrote.  ”Apparently someone figured out our password somehow.   We’re changing the password so that we can, hopefully, stop any further hacking – at least for awhile.”

On its company blog yesterday, Twitter also posted “A friendly reminder about password security” to users, emphasizing the need for strong passwords and warning users to keep an eye out for suspicious links, among other tips.

UPDATE: 12:18 p.m.

Mello said he believes his Twitter account became infected after he received the same message from a friend and clicked on the link.

“I think that’s how I got the virus,” he said.  ”But I was made aware of it and I changed the password. Hopefully that solved it.”
