Both of the 2013 initiatives to the Legislature are being considered today in Senate committees. If the Legislature doesn’t act on them this year, they will go to the ballot in November.
The Agriculture, Water & Rural Economic Development Committee will meet at 10 a.m. to take testimony on Initiative 522, which would require the labeling of genetically engineered food, at the same time the Governmental Operations Committee hears Initiative 517, which would set penalties for harassment of signature gatherers.
- The Senate Human Services & Corrections Committee will hear a bill to require drug testing for welfare recipients, Senate Bill 5585.
- A proposal to tax plastic shopping bags, SB 5248, will be heard at 3:30 p.m. in Senate Ways & Means.
