Morning update: Session Day 25

Amendments to the state constitution to require a two-thirds majority vote of the Legislature to raise taxes are the subject of a public hearing today.

That requirement is already in law, but is awaiting a decision from the state Supreme Court on its validity after a lower court threw it out. Placing it in the constitution would take it out of the courts’ hands.

Sen. Pam Roach, R-Auburn, a strong supporter of the two-thirds requirement, chairs the Government Operations committee that is hearing the three proposed measures today.

The committee will also hear Roach’s Senate Bill 5169, which would implement recommendations of the state’s advisory committee on open records. The hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m.
