It’s Inauguration Day in Olympia.
Gov.-elect Jay Inslee becomes Gov. Jay Inslee at about 10:30 a.m. in the rotunda of the state Capitol. Chief Justice Barbara Madsen will swear in the new governor, who replaces his fellow Democrat Chris Gregoire.
Also taking office today: Bob Ferguson as Attorney General, Kim Wyman as secretary of state and Troy Kelley as state auditor.
An hour later in the House chambers, Inslee will speak to the assembled Legislature for the first time.
After the inaugural address, state Rep. Kevin Parker of Spokane will respond on behalf of Republicans.
Tonight, 5,000 politicos and guests don their tuxes and gowns for the Inaugural Ball from 7-11 p.m. at the Capitol. The menu for the governor’s private reception includes Wagyu Beef Tartar, Dungeness Crab leg prosciutto enrobed, and Galantines of sage Hen.
Amid all the pomp, circumstance and fancy food and dress, there’s also some more casual goings-on. Inslee, a self-professed “hoopaholic,” will play a game of basketball at his new house, the Governor’s Mansion.
