Oregon joins Washington in selecting openly gay legislative leader

The same week Ed Murray of Seattle became Washington’s first openly gay leader of the state Senate, Oregon lawmakers have followed suit.

House Democrats there selected Rep. Tina Kotek to be House speaker. She is the first openly lesbian lawmaker to lead a legislative chamber in that state.

The Associated Press reports that openly gay leaders will control the House or Senate in five states – up from two before last week’s election.

Murray’s promotion to Senate majority leader comes with a caveat: Moderate Democrats and Republicans are talking about electing their own majority leader to lead the Senate. If they are successful, Murray would continue to lead his caucus, but not the chamber.
