Rob McKenna has called Democrat Jay Inslee to concede in the Washington governor’s race. McKenna also informed his campaign staff this afternoon and the mood at the McKenna headquarters was “sad,” campaign manager Randy Pepple is telling a conference call of reporters early this evening.
No word if or when McKenna plans to speak publicly about his rare political defeat. Pepple said that despite having a strong candidate who spoke in detail about issues of interest, the McKenna effort was swimming against too swift of a tide at the top of the ticket – namely the 12.5 to 13 percent edge President Obama carried over Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
Pepple noted that the national Republicans were not spending on federal races in Washington state, which could have helped against the Obama tide.
