Public radio’s Austin Jenkins has fact-checked the interview Troy Kelley, a Tacoma state lawmaker and Democratic candidate to replace Auditor Brian Sonntag, gave last month after lawsuits out of his past hit the news.

Jenkins details a series of transfers Kelley made, moving millions of dollars from bank to bank. The money was at issue in a 2010 lawsuit a former client, Old Republic Title, filed against Kelley, alleging he hid $3.8 million in fees owed to borrowers.

An offshore account in Belize was linked to one of the accounts holding the money. Kelley told reporters last month that the account was opened by his attorney without his knowledge and closed once he discovered it.

But Jenkins found that paperwork indicates Kelley personally signed a form to link to the account in Belize the same day he was subpoenaed to turn over records. His story, which aired on KPLU yesterday, is here.
