Rob McKenna for WA governor campaign turns Gangnam Style dance video in to fundraising appeal

This letter went out over the weekend, taking advantage of the viral video of Rob McKenna and his wife Marilyn joining some Korean-American girls dancing at a recent festival.

If you saw my parents on YouTube dancing “Gangnam Style,” you probably agree that I am going to be hearing about it from other kids for a long time.

Oh boy, that’s not something I am looking forward to. So, I told Mom I would give them $10 to never do that again, but she still hasn’t promised.

Will you match my $10 – so maybe mom and dad will focus on the campaign and not dream up new things to embarrass me?

My dad would be a great Governor, but he’d definitely not do so great at “So You Think You Can Dance.” Thanks for your help.

I’m writing this not just to have another chance to post the video and link to Jordan Schrader’s original blog post. That would be unseemly. It is interesting, though, how a seemingly spontaneous dance number with an important ethic group – sort of the modern equivalent of baby kissing and eating ethics foods – has gotten so much attention. And it doesn’t seem to have hurt the campaign, warming up a candidate who probably could use a little warming up.

Marilyn McKenna seems to have had the most fun with it. It was she who Tweeted how they had embarrassed the kids.

“12-year-old son just offered me $10 never to do this again. He’s no fun.”

“Oldest daughter @Madeleine_McK claims this now-viral video takes parental embarrassment to a whole new level. Victory is mine!”

“A friend re yesterday’s video firestorm: “the best thing you have going is your willingness to humiliate yourself.”
