State PTA opposes Initiative 1185 tax measure

Washington State PTA wants voters to reject Initiative 1185, which would require a two-thirds legislative majority or voter approval to raise taxes, and would require that a legislative majority approve new or increased fees.

“Children are relying to the state legislature to pay for the education they need,” state PTA President Novella Fraser said in a news release. “The state needs to resolve long-standing issues of underfunding and not get bogged down in extended debate over issues like tolling fees. Now is not the time to tie legislators’ hands.”

Initiative sponsor Tim Eyman has said it’s the most effective way for voters to send a no-tax message to Olympia. He says that taxpayers need protection from “job-killing, family-budget-busting tax increases.”
