League of Conservation Voters’ campaign arm endorses Denny Heck in 10th CD race

Tenth Congressional District candidate Denny Heck won endorsement today from an influential environmental group, the national League of Conservation Voters Action Fund. The Olympia Democrat is running for the open seat against Republican Dick Muri of Steilacoom.

The LCV’s decision may look like a no brainer for anyone who follows climate change politics. Heck, an entrepreneur and former state legislator, says global warming is real and that the scientific argument over human causes should be over.

Muri is a bit of a skeptic and says he favors a national energy policy that includes more use of natural gas, nuclear power and some solar and wind.

That said, Heck falls well short of embracing a tax on carbon fuels, which some environmental activists see as a remedy.

But that did not sound like such a shortcoming in the statements from both the LCV’s national and state affiliates, which Heck’s campaign quotes here:

“The LCV Action Fund is proud to endorse Denny Heck for Congress because he will fight climate change and industrial pollution with investments in clean energy that create sustainable jobs in Washington,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski.
“Whether incentivizing energy efficiency in homes and businesses or cleaning up the Puget Sound for generations to come, Denny Heck has a concrete plan that will protect Washington’s environment and promote a thriving regional economy,” Karpinski continued.
“Denny Heck shares important environmental values with voters in the 10th District. He understands that a strong economy and healthy environmental go hand-in-hand, and will work to protect what makes Washington such a special place to live. We enthusiastically support LCV Action Fund’s endorsement of Denny Heck for Congress,” added Brendon Cechovic, Executive Director of Washington Conservation Voters.

Heck also is in line to get financial help from LCV supporters. The group featured him with other candidates on its GiveGreen web site, which league spokesman Jeff Gohringer describes as “the only bundling website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions and candidates.” As of this afternoon, $4,602 has been given for Heck.
