Smell Test update: McKenna’s ’02 resume listed fundraising for Bush

Our Smell Test story published on Saturday found some truth in Our Washington’s latest ad hitting Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna but said one allegation in the ad was unproven: that McKenna had raised funds for his party’s nominee, George W. Bush. The context was Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign.

Even McKenna said he hadn’t recalled the activity on behalf of his party’s standard bearer and he said he would have been focused on raising funds for his own first run for attorney general in 2004.

Over the weekend, the rival Jay Inslee for governor campaign forwarded a copy of a 2002 resume for McKenna, which it said was from the records on file in the King County archives. The resume includes a reference to McKenna raising funds for Bush the first time he ran – in 1999-2000.

The item is mentioned under a heading “Political” and says:

“Bush for President, Washington State Campaign, 1999-2000: Raised $15,000 at three fundraisers; member, Speakers Bureau; Volunteer at Phone Bank, pre-primary, in Bellevue.’’

Whether that carries the sting Our Washington hoped for is for readers and voters to decide. In 1999, Bush’s record had not been written and he was his party’s eventual standard bearer.
