Independent groups on both sides of governor’s race now airing attack ads

An ad attacking Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna hit the television airwaves today, paid for by a coalition that is supporting, though independent from, his Democratic rival Jay Inslee.

The ad paid for by labor unions, trial lawyers and the Democratic Governors Association — organized as Our Washington — parallels an attack ad against Inslee being aired by the Republican Governors Association.

The new ad focuses on actions McKenna took as attorney general, trying to tie him to opposition to a minimum wage increase and saying he supported an increase in the salary for his office.

UPDATE 2:10 p.m.:

State Republican Party Chairman Kirby Wilbur issued a statement that says McKenna is “a reformer ready to take Washington in a new direction – and that is a huge problem for the groups hiding behind this PAC. Made up of organizations that benefit only if the failing status quo is maintained in Olympia, Our Washington is scared of what’s to come under a Governor Rob McKenna. And it should be.”
