First attack ad of governor’s race launched; get ready for more

The Republican Governors Association took to the television airwaves today to bash Democrat Jay Inslee. The ad is online here.

It kicks off what is sure to be a fall TV schedule packed with negative ads, pitting the RGA against Our Washington, a group funded by the Democratic Governors Association, unions and others that has booked its own air time. Each side has collected more than $4 million for independent spending.

And that’s not even counting the larger amounts raised by Inslee and Rob McKenna, who have spent the money so far on ads about their biographies and platforms but haven’t hesitated to attack each other in debates and speeches.

The RGA ad focuses on debt and taxes, attacking Inslee for votes in Congress supporting the nearly $800 billion federal stimulus and the health care overhaul, which it says added to small businesses’ tax burden.

Inslee put out a statement calling it “the same tired argument national Republicans have been trying to use for nearly four years.” He seemed to relish the opportunity to nationalize the race, saying he “worked with President Obama to expand access to health care,” and “stood with President Obama to stop the tide of job losses and provide tax relief to small businesses while Rob McKenna stands with Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan who want tax breaks for the super-rich.”
