Stan Flemming, one of two Republicans running in the state’s new 10th Congressional District, is in Copenhagen, Denmark, today to speak to a symposium about the role of reservists in NATO. Flemming has made much of his military background and status he would, if elected, be the top-ranking military voice in Congress.

His campaign announced his speaking engagement which is at the summer congress of the Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers. The campaign said he was invited to speak because of his extensive military background.

The CIOS describes itself as the world’s largest military-reserve officer organization representing the interests of more than 1.3 million reservists in 36 nations inside and outside of NATO.

Flemming, one of six candidates running in the 10th, is a retired brigadier general in the U.S. Army Reserves as well as a physician, and his panel at the symposium is taking up post-deployment and re-integration issues. Flemming is talking about the medical aspects. The primary election is Aug. 7 but mail-in ballots have been out to voters for more than a week.

For background on the new 10th district candidates, find my most recent overview story about the race and its six candidates in The Olympian and in the News Tribune.

We also ran profiles of the candidates in May – which can be found here for Republican Dick Muri of Steilacoom, here for Republican Stan Flemming of University Place, here for Democrat Jennifer Ferguson of University Place, here for Democrat Denny Heck of Olympia, here for Progressive Independent Sue Gunn of Thurston County, and here for independent Steve Hannon of Yelm.
