Lowenberg commands the Washington Army and Air National Guard and leads the state Military Department, including 911 and emergency-management programs. He has held the position, adjutant general, since 1999.
He is retiring after 44 years of military service, Gov. Chris Gregoire announced today.
Gregoire said she would name his successor Monday and Lowenberg would hand over command July 28.
The National Guard’s 81st Brigade Combat Team deployed twice to Iraq under his leadership.
