State GOP spokesman Josh Amato will leave his job at the state party next week to work as campaign manager for Bill Driscoll, a Tacoma Republican who announced Monday for the 6th Congressional District.
This week another Republican in the race, Gig Harbor’s Jesse Young, brought in Jay Johnson as campaign manager, saying in a campaign news release that Johnson has experience in GOP politics and in the financial services industry.
Young and Driscoll are both trying to succeed retiring Rep. Norm Dicks, vying with three other Republicans — lawyer Doug Cloud, who defeated Young in the 2010 primary; former Boeing engineer Stephan Andrew Brodhead; and accountant David “Ike” Eichner — to take on Democratic state Sen. Derek Kilmer.
Amato became communications director for the state GOP after managing Pierce County Councilman Dick Muri’s 2010 campaign against U.S. Rep. Adam Smith. Muri was soundly defeated, but at 55 percent to 45 percent, the margin was closer than any of Smith’s previous election results since he first won the seat in 1996.
Driscoll, a Weyerhaeuser descendant, is putting together a campaign team that includes a couple of experienced GOP consultants, Mainstream Republicans director Alex Hays and Afton Swift, who until recently was in D.C. as chief of staff to Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler. Swift was Dino Rossi‘s gubernatorial campaign manager in 2004 and 2008.
Young, a technology consultant, also this week announced the endorsement of Kim Wyman, the Thurston County auditor who is running for secretary of state.
