Word from the state capital is that lawmakers who had been hoping for a Good Friday adjournment of the special session may need to work at least Holy Saturday to finish budget negotiations.

The Associated Press reports that Democratic House Speaker Frank Chopp and Republican Sen. Joe Zarelli are meeting with Gov. Chris Gregoire this afternoon in what the governor has called the last opportunity to reach agreement before another special session becomes more likely.

The reports don’t sound hopeful. A spokeswoman for the governor says there is still “a lot of frustration” and that the sides are “not close enough” to an agreement. Today is the 23rd day of the 30-day special session.
