Derek Kilmer gets a campaign manager: Maria Cantwell’s

Sen. Maria Cantwell’s campaign manager is leaving after five months to run Derek Kilmer‘s campaign for Congress.

Chris Gregorich confirmed he has taken the job as Kilmer’s manager. The move was first reported this morning by National Journal in D.C.

Neither Cantwell nor Kilmer have drawn a well-known opponent. Republicans challenging Cantwell are led by Michael Baumgartner, a freshman state senator from Spokane, while Kilmer faces Republicans Jesse Young and Doug Cloud — but it’s early, and others are still considering the race.

Gregorich has experience helping Kilmer. He ran Democrats’ state Senate campaign committee in 2010. In a Republican year nationally, Democrats lost four Senate seats that year — including the one captured by Baumgartner — shrinking their majority to a narrow 27-22 that turned out this month to be even more fragile than anyone thought.

But Sen. Kilmer won his swing district in a landslide.
