Republican Shelly Schlumpf of Puyallup announced today that she will run to represent the 25th District in the state House.

Under recent redistricting, the region includes the cities of Puyallup and Fife.

This November will be the first election under the new political map, though the 25th District is expected to remain a swing district.

Former NFL player Dane Looker originally campaigned for the position, wavering between running for the Legislature and Puyallup School Board before leaving the House race. He was elected to the school board in November.

Republican Rep. Bruce Dammeier is leaving the position to run for state Senate.

Here’s Schlumpf’s campaign announcement:

Local small business leader Shelly Schlumpf announced her campaign for the state House of Representatives today.  Schlumpf will seek the 25th District seat being vacated by Republican Bruce Dammeier who is leaving the House to campaign for the State Senate.  Schlumpf is a Republican.

“I am really grateful for the support I’ve received as I thought about this decision,” said Schlumpf, “from my family, to leaders in the business community, local teachers and both Republicans and Democrats.  I plan to roll up my shirt sleeves and work hard to earn the support of the voters in the 25th District and win this election!”

Outgoing State Representative Bruce Dammeier praised Schlumpf, “Shelly is a team builder and a job creator.  I really admire her ability to work across our community to make important job projects a reality.  Olympia needs leaders like Shelly to put people back to work and help us out of this recession.”

Schlumpf announced the focus of her campaign: “Jobs, strong schools and a balanced budget.  This is what we’re worried about on Main Street and it’s what Olympia should be working on every day.”

Representative Hans Zeiger said, “Shelly is a go getter, she knows how to get things done, both for local business and as a volunteer in our schools.  I respect the deep roots she has in the Valley, and I trust her to represent the people of the 25th District.”

Schlumpf currently serves as the President and CEO of the Puyallup Sumner Chamber of Commerce and previously owned and operated a local building and construction business with her husband, until his death.  Shelly has two grown children.  She has been involved in the Puyallup Daffodil Festival for over 30 years and both she and her mother were Daffodil Princess representatives from Orting.
