Longtime Federal Way City Councilwoman Linda Kochmar has announced her candidacy for Legislature in the 30th District.

Kochmar, who was first elected to the city council in 1997 and served as mayor before the city’s conversion to a strong mayor form of government, is seeking the seat currently held by Democratic Rep. Mark Miloscia, who is running for state auditor.

Kochmar, a Republican, said in a release that the state’s budget challenges “demonstrate the need for new leadership.”

“I have always worked hard to provide the best for our community with the least expenditure of dollars,” she said. “I am concerned about our families who are struggling to survive in this down economy and about our schools that are facing severe funding issues.”

Kochmar is a risk manager and program administrator for the Lakehaven Utility District.
