Tacoma: Smitherman not yet conceding, but wishes Ibsen the best

District 1 City Council candidate Karen Smitherman just told me in a phone call that, though she’s not conceding, “I clearly know how these things end up, I guess.”

Down by some 400 votes and 6 percentage points to Anders Ibsen after Tuesday night’s ballot counts, the retired school teacher wished luck to her opponent.

“I only wish the best for Anders,” Smitherman said. “This is a great city, and future decisions for this council are going to be very difficult to make. They’re going to require some careful thought-processing.”

“I guess what I can say is that it was a wonderful campaign. The people who worked with me were great. It was always very positive at the door. I’m optimistic — but I would have love to served the city.”

“I’m not conceding — I can’t until after the next batch goes up — but I’m realistic,” she added.
