Andrew K. Milton, who ran an unsuccessful primary campaign for a seat on the Tacoma School Board, has endorsed Scott Henize in the general election for Position 3.

Heinze won more than 32 percent of the vote in the four-way race. He faces Dexter Gordon, who won more than 36 percent, in the November general election.

Heinze is a small businessman and volunteer with Communities in Schools. Gordon is a University of Puget Sound professor who has organized a national education conference aimed at closing the achievement gap for minority students.

Milton, a teacher in the Steilacoom School District, said in making his endorsement that Heinze “understands that leading means ensuring that those you lead are enabled to succeed.”

He also praised Heinze’s ability, gleaned from the business world, to think strategically and his understanding of “the importance of a teacher evaluation process that encourages teachers to improve their craft.”
