With initial ballot counts posted in the race for Tacoma City Council Position 1 seat, Anders Ibsen and Karen Smitherman have comfortable leads and appear headed toward the general election ballot.

Ibsen, 25, the deputy director of operations for a Bellevue-based law firm, garnered the most votes with about 36 percent, according to early returns.

“We’re looking forward to working just as hard in the general to be a voice for neighborhoods,” Ibsen said in a telephone interview shortly after the results were posted.

Smitherman, 59, a retired Tacoma Public Schools employee, was running a close second at 34 percent. Rounding out the field in the four candidate contest were Joe Atkinson and Carl Alexander. Only the top two advance to the general election.

The nine-member city council’s District 1 seat comes open at year’s end, as two-term Councilman Spiro Manthou is ineligible to run again due to term limits.

Although the race was the only council contest on the primary ballot, city voters will decide four Tacoma City Council races – including two district and two at-large contests – in November’s general election.
