Tacoma: Council candidates’ campaign money update

With tomorrow the deadline to submit primary election ballots, the city’s only contested council race this go-around has seen a flurry of last minute campaign advertisements.

They’ve included robocalls from candidate Joe Atkinson and former Mayor Bill Baarsma on behalf of candidate Karen Smitherman; and new mailers from Anders Ibsen. The only candidate among four vying for the council’s Position 1 seat with no noticeable advertising presence in the election’s final days is Carl Alexander.

The advertising trends seem to reflect campaign finance figures, which show Alexander has raised no money for the race. Meanwhile, Ibsen is leading the pack in fund raising, followed by Smitherman and Atkinson, both of whom have taken on debt to bankroll their respective campaigns, records show.

Here are the latest financing details from the state’s Public Disclosure Commission for the Position 1 Council race:

Carl Alexander:
Raised: $0
Spent: $0
Debt: $0

Joe Atkinson:
Raised: $7,602.85
Spent: $8,901.50
Debt: $3,200.12

Anders Ibsen
Raised: $28,348.44
Spent: $16,178.85
Debt: $0

Karen Smitherman
Raised: $22,450.00
Spent: $8,966.07
Debt: $12,283.52
