With Gov. Chris Gregoire announcing this morning she is not running again, the Democrat becomes an instant lame duck with 18 months left in her second term. That doesn’t mean she becomes a useless appendage to state government and I suspect the themes of her recent agenda survive.
It’s easy to see how her agenda of streamlining state government and earmarking future tax receipts for education as the overall context for the 2012 governor’s race debate. Republican Rob McKenna already endorsed a portion of that agenda – while claiming it in his own way – when he announced he is running for Gregoire’s open seat on a “new direction” theme last week.
