It is the third version of district lines as prepared by Districting Committee Special Master Steven Garrett and is in response to concerns expressed by residents as well as member of the five-member committee.
This link includes all three versions but the latest – labeled May C – is the most current and reflects the latest thinking of the master and the committee members.
The newest map makes three major changes from the earlier version called Map B. It keeps Joint Base Lewis McChord within the Lakewood-centered 6th District rather than combine it with the 3rd District. It also joins the Gig Harbor Peninsula with suburban areas of University Place and Fircrest, rather than with West and North Tacoma as Map B did.
Finally, it changes Map B’s proposal of containing both the Puyallup Valley and downtown Tacoma in a new District 2.
Garrett has to come up with a plan that carves the county into seven districts with as close to the same population as practicable. He must also, according to the county charter, make them “compact and contiguous” and keep “natural communities” together.
A hearing will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at the Central Maintenance Facility, 4812 196th Street East in Spanaway.
The final public hearing is set for June 16 at Gig Harbor City Hall, 3510 Grandview Street.
According to the charter, the committee must approve maps by June 28.
