Special session update: Day 21

State lawmakers needs to reach deals on their major sticking points this week to have any hope of adjourning as scheduled May 25. Otherwise, we’re headed for another special session.

Let’s just say the Legislature is not exactly keeping pace with the winners of Sunday’s Capital City Marathon. In fact, a better comparison for the session’s velocity, Washington State Wire’s Erik Smith suggests, is the horde of “zombies” that shuffled to the Capitol Friday.

Today senators on the Ways and Means Committee could vote on a consolidation of several agencies into the Department of Enterprise Services, a plan that includes the contracting out of some back-office services performed by the state and elimination of the State Printer. The bill is SB 5931.

A related bill that gets a hearing today in the same committee, SB 5669, would require parks, wildlife and environmental agencies to share back-office functions. It’s a watered-down version of Gov. Chris Gregoire‘s proposal to merge some of the natural resource agencies.
