In their first presidential straw poll Friday, Washington state Republicans backed a candidate who is only just starting to register on the national radar screen: Herman Cain, the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza.
Here’s more on Cain from a Wall Street Journal report written after he was seen as performing well in the recent South Carolina debate.
With 54 votes, the radio talk show host barely edged out former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who is expected to decide soon whether he will run.
Big names like Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin and Donald Trump lagged far behind.
A couple of rising stars of the party, Chris Christie and Paul Ryan, performed well even though they haven’t given any indication they’re running.

Bellevue – On Friday, May 6th the Washington State Republican Party held their first official straw poll at their 29th Annual Spring Gala Dinner & Auction. Only paid attendees were able to vote and were not given advanced notice. The names on the ballot were listed in alphabetical order with the option to write in a candidate.
Kirby Wilbur, Chairman of the Washington State Republican Party issued the following statement on the results of the straw poll:
“The close results demonstrate that the Republican Party does not have a clear frontrunner. Herman Cain has been doing an excellent job getting his name out among Republican voters and his style appeals to many people. As the process moves forward and more individuals enter the race, it will be interesting to see how the perception of the various candidates changes.”
