Special session update: Day 3

The 30-day special session continues with a hearing this morning on several proposed cuts to the Department of Corrections.

The cuts being pushed by the Senate in its bipartisan budget and in SB 5891 would keep the department from holding some inmates past the release date they have earned through good behavior. The department can hold inmates because of, for example, uncertainty about where they would live.

The bill being heard by Senate Ways and Means would also reduce the supervision of some offenders following their release. These include first-time offenders and those coming from jails, as opposed to state prisons.

The panel could also vote on whether to end a property tax deferral program for low-income homeowners, as SB 5587 would do.
