Tom Swanson, assistant to Pierce County Councilwoman Joyce McDonald, announced this week he’ll run for the Puyallup City Council seat now held by Don Malloy.

Tom Swanson

Malloy is retiring from his District 3, Position 1 seat at the end of the year. The primary election is Aug. 16.

Swanson believes his combination of education and government experience will help him lead the city at a time of high unemployment and economic belt-tightening, he said in a campaign kick-off news release.

He is a graduate of Puyallup High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in workforce education and development from Southern Illinois University and a master’s in international relations/national security policy from Troy University.

He served aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke as a sonar technician, according to the biography.

His political experience includes work as a campaign coordinator and adviser to Republican Dino Rossi and as a legislative assistant in the Legislature. His community activities include service on the board of the Puyallup/Sumner Chamber of Commerce and as a City of Puyallup Planning Commissioner,  his resume says

He and his wife, Meridith, have one child, 6-month-old Henry.
