Want a free dinner? First get elected to the state House and then say “Let’s Get Washington Working Again.”

The first part might be hard. But the second way to qualify for the House Republicans contest is pretty easy. Just use the phrase that is the theme of the caucus in a floor speech and you get entered in a special drawing.

House Minority Leader Rich DeBolt, R-Chehalis, confirmed the contest but asked that I not express any cynicism about it. Given that it is rather cynical all by itself I promised not to pile on.

I asked DeBolt about the contest after seeing him walk over and hand one of his members something after they’d worked in “Let’s Get Washington Working Again” into a floor speech. Since the bill didn’t seem especially relevant to the economy and jobs, I became curious.

Sure enough, any House Republican (at least I assume it is limited to the Republicans but I can check on that) who uses the phrase exactly and in its entirety gets a ticket. Those tickets are placed in a basket in the caucus room and a drawing will be held for a free dinner.

I’d be tempted to say that at least they’ll get Washington eating again but that would be cynical.

Children at play. Whether in the legislature or the local school yard. To me the state would be better off if, oh about 120 or so of the 147 legislators just stayed home and let the serious legislators work on the problems.

  2. Seems like a good way to get a newsie to express cynicism about something is to ask them to not express cynicism about it.

I’m having a drawing for a free dinner for any reporter or columnist who uses the phrase “Let’s put Washington back to work” in a story or column. Peter Callahan, your name is in the hat!
