Lawmakers won’t debate traffic cameras

Bills to standardize the traffic cameras that are sprouting up all over the state died for lack of a House or Senate floor vote today. The causes of death were slightly different in the two chambers.

The bills contained relatively modest changes, but the House has plenty of opponents of cameras, and they were poised to try to load up Tacoma Rep. Connie Ladenburg’s bill with a series of tougher restrictions, including putting the machines to local votes.

“It just kind of got bogged down,” House Majority Leader Pat Sullivan said.

Over in the Senate, amendments to Eatonville GOP Sen. Randi Becker’s SB 5188 were less of a threat for procedural reasons, but there was a disagreement among Republicans over the bill that led them to seek a ruling from Lt. Gov. Brad Owen.

That seemed to be resolved when key Democrats and Republicans agreed to remove the controversial section from the bill, but Democratic leaders didn’t allow it to come to the floor. Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, said she wasn’t sure why.

“They maybe thought it was a bill that would bring a lot of attention,” Haugen said. “A lot of people hate cameras.”

And our wonderful legislature, both sides, just handed Timmy another year of moneymaking opportunities. Meantime, since budgets are being cut, every frigging intersection became more dangerous. To you folks in Olympia, today was cutoff. I am sure you all tonight will have a great feed courtesy of lobbyists and then at some point whine about the burden of lawmaking. Disgusting. Cheers.

  2. If WA state won’t Ban the CAMERAS, the citizens will.

Despite attempts to deny the vote like in Wenatchee, WA. RLC issue will eventually be decided by the public!

LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE! Who do you work for, your citizens or the scamera lobbist????

(Or are they buying you all Ruth Chris Steakhouse dinners like ACS did for a bunch of Legislators in MD a few years back http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/23/2392.asp)

    Fight the SCAM!

    Ban the CAMS!

    Join the fight!
