Good morning. Today is the deadline for bills to come out of budget committees, so committees are working all day. There may be weekend work ahead, with the House planning to go on the floor Saturday morning.

Today:

  • Senate Ways and Means hears SB 5769, a bill by Sen. Phil Rockefeller, D-Bainbridge Island, to phase out coal at the TransAlta power plant by 2020.
  • The same panel hears SB 5852, eliminating authority for state workers to retire and come back to work full-time. Prompted by complaints about abuse of “retire-rehire,” the bill by Sen. Mike Hewitt, R-Walla Walla, would mostly eliminate the program but retirees could still return to work part-time.
  • Senate Transportation hears SSB 5185, which would suspend some rules about equipment standards and wearing helmets for motorcyclists driving in parades.
  • On the Capitol campus the Anti-Hunger and Nutrition Coalition is hosting a lobby day and the Washington Off-Highway Vehicle Alliance is holding an off-highway vehicle awareness rally.
