Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash
WASHINGTON – Senate Democrats made history today by selecting Washington’s Patty Murray to head the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, marking the first time a woman will hold the influential post.

Murray, a fourth-term senator first elected in 1992, will replace Democratic Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii as the new committee chair. Akaka, an 86-year-old veteran of World War II, has headed the committee for the last four years.

“Following in his footsteps is an amazing task, but I am ready to take this on, and I’m very excited,” Murray said in an interview.

Murray joined the Veterans’ Affairs Committee in 1995, becoming the first woman named to the panel.

“I look at this as a passion for veterans, men and women alike,” she said of her new assignment.

Murray, 60, knows a thing or two about veterans from personal experience.

She’s the daughter of a disabled World War II veteran, who earned the Purple Heart as one of the first GIs to land on Okinawa. And in the summer of 1972, as a 22-year-old student at Washington State University, she interned at the Seattle veterans hospital, where she was assigned to do physical rehabilitation in the psychiatric ward.

The appointment increases Murray’s already high profile on Capitol Hill. She’s the Senate majority’s conference secretary, making her the fourth highest-ranking Democrat, and she heads the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which is working to recruit and fund candidates for the 2012 election.

Roll Call, a Washington-based publication, this week called Murray one of five senators to watch closely in the new Congress, saying she will “influence the debate and drive caucus decisions” over the next two years.

“Her dual roles put her at the nexus of every legislative and political decision the Senate majority will make in the 112th Congress,” Roll Call reported.

    Yikes.

  2. JudasEscargot says:

Amazing what seniority and hard work will do.

  3. taxedenoughintacoma says:

Dim Bulb Patty in charge of anything is like Rep. Michele Bachmann being assigned to the House Intelligence Committee.

dumb and dumber. You pick who is tops.

  4. puyallupmutt says:

She’s going to make Vets use the same high quality orthodontry that she has used.

  5. BlaineCGarver says:

I don’t like Patty. Did not/would not vote for her. BUT, she does an extremely fine job of taking care of Veteran’s Issues. If she could pull her head out of the sand and see the dangers of a socialist America, I’d have no problem with her at all.

  6. BigSwingingRichard says:

    This might work out.

The VA hospitals can double check her for what I have always assumed is some undiagnosed head injury. After that, they should start checking everyone who voted for her.

  7. Whatever1214 says:

I am not a Patty Murray fan but, come on folks, find a better picture. The one you always use makes her look like a drooling mouth breather. She is our elected Senator, even if you did not vote for her.

  8. JudasEscargot says:

I wish pictures of the commenters was mandatory. It would eliminate 99% of the comments on politicians pictures.

Oh, and Blaine….the Veterans Administration IS a socialist program. Otherwise veterans would be paying the private sector for the privilege of sustaining life long injuries in service to county.

Thank goodness that some people can see past a boogeyman word.

  9. JudasEscargot says:

taxedenough – when you get done reading the volumes of work Murray has done for veterans, you can get back to us in a week or so.

All the genius behind the “TaxedEnoughAlready Party” could be lumped together and if you take away the Koch Brothers money and Dick Armey, you have the collective knowledge of a trailer park.

Just remember – “keep the government out of my medicare”

“If she could pull her head out of the sand and see the dangers of a socialist America, I’d have no problem with her at all.”

See my problem with this asinine comment is that it is totally ignorant. First let’s just get over the word Socialist because it obviously is not correct. But I’ve yet to see that creating and funding programs that help Americans is anything but dangerous LOL. If you think about it Capitalism is fueled by greed and greed is a 7 deadly sin. The real dangers are those that would take from America and never pay their due. Like the 1% that want tax cuts when they should be trying to help America or even at the least pay their DUES. Greed and selfishness only create the economy mess that was created under Bush tax cut policies for the rich. Open your eyes people. This statement is like when they tried to scare you in the 70’s about communist and McCarthyism. Don’t be a sheep and believe these insane statements above. If you love America and you help Americans, ain’t nothing socialist about that, it’s called Patriotic.

Have we finally found something this useless Senator can do??!! Veterans – please do not expect too much from this dullard!!

  12. tortoise says:

Nice pic, mouth agape. Very senatorial.

I needed some help with the VA, went to Murray’s Tacoma office and got zip. My problem wasn’t all that complicated either. Her office was just screwed up.

  13. t_Johnson says:

Please do not vote for her again.

  14. fbergford says:

I am a veteran and this is a terrible choice! She is a career politician who has her own interests at heart. Just because you are the daughter or son of a veteran doesn’t make you an “expert” at what WE veterans know or care about. And just because she interned at the Seattle VA in ’72…almost 40 years ago it adds credential?! @#$% that! There should be someone in that position that is actually a veteran!

  15. sumner402 says:

The right wing proves….again how pathetic and shallow they really are.
You people would send your kids to bed with tanned behinds if they said the things you do here.
You all should be ashamed of yourselves.

  16. sumner402 says:

Senator Murry is the perfect choice for this position, she has done more for the nations vets than any other Congressman in decades.
The state of Washington should be and IS very proud to have her as our Senator.

  17. dankuykendall says:

She only puts her name on high profile stuff that makes her appear more knowledgeable than she is. Ok so her Dad was a disabled vet, exactly what does that really mean, 10%, 20%… 100%? It always gets tiring to see people claim disabled vet status of family members as acquired knowledge.

  18. fbergford says:

sumner…I ask you to name what she has done for me. I fall in the “nations vets” category you just mentioned.

  19. olbluedoc says:

Check it out for yourself. You have a computer. Google her name along with the word “Veterans.” One thing you’ll find is a bill – S. 1237, the Homeless Veterans and Other Veterans Health Care Authorities Act of 2010. She tried to get that one thru but it was blocked by the Republicans. This woman has done more for Vets than most of your precious Republicans combined. Don’t think so? Like I said, look it up. Come back here and quote truthful stats, not the usual Socialist, Leftist, Marxist, whateverist drivel you tired morons keep quacking about. Cmon, say something intelligent and useful for a change.

  20. olbluedoc says:

She’s the best person to represent the Vets. And yes, I’m a veteran of the United States Army.

  21. fbergford says:

olbluedoc…so you’re telling me the 20 something years she has been in office this is all she has done? Passed 2 bills? Or helped pass 2 bills!? Really?
