Tacoma Councilman David Boe files forms with state PDC, first step toward running for full term

It’s only the C-1, but it is the first official indication that David Boe – appointed a year ago to a Tacoma City Council vacancy – intends to run for the at-large position.

That wouldn’t normally be news as folks who seek appointment to open seats generally are expected to run. But Boe made noises about not running, saying it took time away from his architecture business. He also was shaken after a city ethics board investigated possible conflicts of interest after he belatedly disclosed his ties to a team competing for a city contract to renovate Cheney Stadium.

The five-member panel decided “a preponderance of evidence fails to establish a violation of the specific prohibited conduct contained in the Code of Ethics.”

No candidacy is official until filing week in June. But the C1 allows a candidate to begin campaign-related activities such as fund-raising.

“I’ll take the next couple of months to do proper homework before a possible filing with the county,” Boe said via e-mail.

Boe, who served on the planning commission before his appointment, has become a prominent voice on the council on development and planning matters, often questioning city staff on issues such as the threat to Old City Hall and the planned surface parking lot at the old Sauro’s dry cleaning business on Pacific Avenue.

Also recently filing C-1’s are two candidates for council position 1. That’s now held by Spiro Manthou but he cannot run for a third term under city term limits. They are Karen Smitherman and Anders Ibsen. The district covers West Tacoma and most of the North End.

At first is was a little skeptical, but as I have watched this council unfold, I have been impressed by Mr. Boe. He brings a fresh perspective and a willingness to dig deep into an issue. he’s not just another “yes” vote. More than once I have seen the council and manger shift directions based upon the questions and observations he has brought forth.

He is also willing to be critical of the city manager and that goes a long way in my book.

    Good News!

Tacoma very badly needs an architect on the Tacoma City Council who has training on good urban design and someone who is a big advocate on saving Old City Hall.

  3. Councilman David Boe has earned a TACOMIC INT3GR1TY rating of 10, the highest ranking yet available. BOE!
