Pierce Transit sets six meetings about sales tax measure on Feb. 8 ballot

A series of meetings about a sales-tax increase to fund area bus service is scheduled to begin Wednesday and continue through Jan. 26.

Pierce Transit is sponsoring the meetings to get out the word and deliver facts on its Feb. 8 ballot measure to raise the local sales tax by three-tenths of one percent. That would mean three cents on every $10 purchase within Pierce Transit’s boundaries.

The bus agency already collects .06 percent.

Pierce Transit officials say the tax hike is necessary to maintain service at current levels. Without it, there will be dramatic cutbacks on bus routes and the frequency of bus runs, they say.

The agency’s buses carried some 18 million passengers in 2009. You can read about Pierce Transit’s history here

Here’s the list of meetings and the routes they specifically concern:

Routes: 48 and 300

Tacoma
Jan. 24, 4 to 6 p.m.
The Evergreen State College, Commons area, 1210 6th Ave.
Routes: 1, 16, 26 and 28

Tacoma
Jan. 25, 4 to 6 p.m.
Tacoma Goodwill Industries, 714 S. 27th St.
Routes: 3, 26, 45 and 48

Puyallup/South Hill
Jan. 16, 4 to 6 p.m.

    OK…. the sales tax question is on the ballot, therefore it is a political issue. Why is Pierce Transit using public monies to push a political issue. I thought it was against the law for government employees to use public funding for political reasons.

    Dear Mr/Ms Sherman,

    As a “news reporter” I would like to request you consider reporting facts and not just present an article which slants the information provided by those who want you to present their point of view.

    Here’s the reality: Pierce transit collects .06 percent of the sales tax and they want to increase this by 50% to .09 percent. Today, taxpayers pay a combined 93 cents for every ten dollars of taxable purchases and this proposal would increase this to 96 cents per ten dollars spent with all the increase going to Pierce Transit.

    Why do they need 50% more? Are less people riding the bus, or has the agency expanded beyond it’s revenues? Both?

    You write Pierce Transit served 18 million passengers. This is impressive since there are only 300,000 people in Pierce County. Either 17,700,000 people visited Pierce County just to ride the bus, or every citizen of the county rode a bus an average of 60 times, or perhaps you need to question the information you have been provided.

    More likely, Pierce Transit provided 18,000,000 seat miles, or something like this. A competent reporter would ask how many of those seat miles actually had a butt in that seat and how many empty buses are being driven around the county all day and all night long.

    Do your job, ask questions, question the information you are being asked to report and consider providing substantive information about the justification for this requested tax increase.

    If you included this information and your editor removed it then be sure to let your editor know than there still are some people who think about what they read and can tell when your reporting makes no sense.

How much will it cost?? facility rental, staff time, re-imbursed travel, to hold these meetings to which probably no one will attend due to inclement weather and the locations, especially Evergreen State College? The time set for the meetings, 4 to 6 p.m., or 5 to 7 p.m., is certainly not taking into any consideration those folks who ride the bus to work.
    A perfect plan designed to fail for those whose self-interests will be served by failure.
    Lord save us from beaurocrats.

  4. BigSwingingRichard: The earlier article you commented on, published the 7th of January, contains the information you’re requesting again here. Did you not read the press release from Pierce Transit? I think you did read it, you’re being obtuse because of some personal vendetta that doesn’t require you to be honest.

    The long and short of it: Pierce Transit’s revenues have fallen because sales tax revenues have fallen with the economic downturn.

    There may be some people who think about what they read and can tell when reporting makes no sense, but you are clearly not one of them.

    Just vote NO. The question we need to ask is, if this serive we privatized would they need this increase? If you pass this 10% tax is next.

    NO NEW TAXES OF ANY KIND UNTIL WE HAVE REAL REFORM.
