The Republican sweep is complete! Sam Reed becomes governor of Washington

Not since early 1985 has a Republican been governor of Washington. Until now when Samuel Sumner Reed became governor.

Okay, acting governor. But when it has been 25 years, the GOP will take what it can get.

As Secretary of State, Reed is third in line of succession to the governor. Because of a rather archaic provision of the state constitution, an acting governor must be designated whenever the “real” governor leaves the boundaries of the state.

Usually that is Lt. Gov. Brad Owen. But with Gregoire in Germany and Owen in China, the job falls to Reed.

Reed has filled in before so it’s not actually the first GOP politician in the proverbial big chair. Former GOP SOS Ralph Munro also did the duty during his time in office.

Don’t expect any change in policy. Usually, the acting governor doesn’t even leave his own office.

Here’s the announcement on Reed’s webpage.
