The Republican sweep is complete! Sam Reed becomes governor of Washington

Not since early 1985 has a Republican been governor of Washington. Until now when Samuel Sumner Reed became governor.

Okay, acting governor. But when it has been 25 years, the GOP will take what it can get.

As Secretary of State, Reed is third in line of succession to the governor. Because of a rather archaic provision of the state constitution, an acting governor must be designated whenever the “real” governor leaves the boundaries of the state.

Usually that is Lt. Gov. Brad Owen. But with Gregoire in Germany and Owen in China, the job falls to Reed.

Reed has filled in before so it’s not actually the first GOP politician in the proverbial big chair. Former GOP SOS Ralph Munro also did the duty during his time in office.

Don’t expect any change in policy. Usually, the acting governor doesn’t even leave his own office.

Here’s the announcement on Reed’s webpage.

Considering the results of the election, I’d be hiding out to and I guess Germany is as good of a place as any.

  2. the3rdpigshouse says:

Anyone who believes Sam Reed is a Republican would be naive enough to believe Murray is a competent Senator!!

  3. fivecardstud says:

the3rdpigshouse, wouldn’t you think the people here would be intelligent enough not to follow Murray and Obama off a cliff? I’m in awe at the outcome of the election. This administration isn’t going to stop until we are called The Socialist States of America and the government tells you when to get up and go to bed. It’s amazing.

  4. dirtydan54 says:

Well I see he has quickly adapted to the work ethic of Governor. Nothing at all on his desk, or in the garbage can, no computer. Hmm, seems like a pretty good hiding spot too.

  5. BlaineCGarver says:

*rollingeyes* Geeez, fellas, take a break. Reed’s a good guy, and I wish he’d run for Gov. He’s one of the AGs that have signed on to the suit against DC to maintain States Rights, especially concerning the 2nd Amandment.

  6. dirtydan54 says:

My comment was meant to be in the spirit of humor much like the article is, at least it was to me. Not a criticism upon the person himself. Jeez no wonder columnists take so much heat for what they write. lol

When did Sam also become attorney general? Or did he sign on to that suit this morning as acting governor?

  7. commoncents says:

As someone who has voted for the D’s in the past gubernatorial elections, I would vote for Sam Reed in a heartbeat. I have more confidence in his ability to do the right thing regardless of political affiliation than I do for anyone else at level of state politics. Close second is Rob McKenna. Democrats better come up with someone good, and I mean real good if they want to keep the office.

  8. EatonvilleTaxPayer says:

I would also vote for Sam Reed or Rob McKenna for Governor. I hope one of them runs next go around.

The picture is funny! Finally someone with a sense of humor!

Wouldn’t Gregoire be in a stew if she came back and found the “Governor” had signed on with McKenna during her absence. Oh, I would SO love it if Reed would do that :)

  9. aranciata says:

Anyone who would be photographed with his shoes off and his feet up on his office desk lacks the temperament for the job. This guy displays open contempt for the office he holds and by extension for the citizenry. Ergo, it is likely that he would poll well in Seattle, Pierce ans Snohomish, would carry Thurston in a landslide and probably is Washington State gubernatorial material.
