DSHS, union strike deal for additional furloughs

The Department of Social and Health Services moved closer to agreements today [Thursday] that could expand unpaid furloughs to all of the agency’s employees. This would include the 60 percent of workers that were exempt from 10-day furloughs that the Legislature already ordered.

    Cutting pay levels would be more beneficial to the citizens than cutting service levels. These furloughs are the wrong approach to address the institutionalized overpayment of workers.

  2. I guess this explains calling DSHS and being put on hold for an hour last week. The reigning champion, On Hold, won that round – we gave up from exhaustion and neck cramps.

    We are the 5th highest taxed state in the nation . We have a unheard of 9.6% sales tax rate . We have thousands of State employees that are hardly touched by this downturn. HEY, DSHS why not join the rest of us in this depression.

  4. I think there is a lot misinformation out there about just how much state employees make. City and county employees make considerably more money. State employees often are the first target when there is a budget deficit.

    I work for the state as an auditor and make just over $40k, I have a bachelors and masters in accounting and am a licensed cpa. During good times I could have made considerably more money in the private sector, but traded that for the security of a state job.

    I also find it odd that the state is furloughing positions that are revenue generating and making accross the board cuts to agencies such as the department of revenue. One $36k a year revenue agent position eliminated can decrease state revenues collected by a half million dollars or more.

    Also voluntary furloughs do not count against an employees time with the agency and vacation and sick time accrual, provided the employee still works 90 hours in the month. So in essense the state is providing more benefits for less time on the job.

    State agencies are making real cuts. But I get the sense they are just holding on till the economy picks up and want to go right back to their old spending levels instead of resetting and realizing that even in good times, the state must be frugal with taxpayer money.

    Before targeting state employees, I would first look at city and county wages. Then I would like all recommendations for performance audits to be implemented. Next i would like to see tribal gambling contribute to the state coffers as they do in every other state, except ours. Next I would like to see the purchase agreements evalated. When we order office supplies, i swear the catolog lists prices are 3 times higher then if I went to walmart and picked up the same products. next I would make a law that if the budget has already been written and the chief economic adviser came out with a report indicated a budget surplus. The legistlature would be forbidden from amending the budget to spend more without a 2/3 vote. This wouldn’t be a tax increase so the initiative wouldn’t be applicable.
