WA’s 8th District: It’s gonna be a mud-bath (and already is…)

Got a rain slicker and a good pair of boots?

Not to be outdone by the Patty Murray-Dino Rossi raunch-fest, but the mud is also flying fast and furiously in Washington’s 8th Congressional district — with the campaign of three-term Republican incumbent Congressman Dave Reichert (and supporters) striking back in force this week.

After the campaign of Democratic challenger Suzan DelBene has peppered the airwaves for the past few weeks with ads attacking Reichert on his record (think deep voice-overs intoning gloom over ominous background music, with bad headshots of Reichert – if that’s at all possible), Reichert’s campaign came back with some negative campaign mojo of its own.

(Some of DelBene’s offerings …)

Earlier this week, the former top cop’s Congressional campaign set up the “Who is Suzan DelBene” website, replete with a grainy black and white photo of the opponent, and a growing list of “25 Ways Suzan Is Wrong” that visitors are encouraged to re-visit on a daily basis for the latest installment. (Any website that posts red-lettering on a black background field can’t claim to target the glass half-full set, can it?)

Also throughout this week, individuals tweeting their support for Reichert and Red County, the right-leaning blog, have repeatedly questioned why DelBene could have omitted from her campaign website biography (and her wikipedia entry) her long-running affiliation with Portland-based Reed College’s Board of Trustees. Here’s Red County’s spin:

Why then does this laudable credential not appear on DelBene’s campaign bio or the entry for her in Wikipedia? Perhaps because during DelBene’s tenure on the board, Reed College’s comfy reputation as a playground for chemical experimentation began to clash with the harsh realities of a pair of heroin overdoses and a challenge from Oregon’s U.S. District Attorney to shape up, or else.

(Red County and Reichert supporters have been quick to characterize Reed as a bastion for Godless commies in their posts and tweets associating the college with DelBene. Absent though has been any mention that Reed also has consistently rated among the best and most diverse small colleges in the nation, according to Newsweek’s annual higher ed rankings; or the fact that the college is DelBene’s alma mater).

On balance, the Red County offering seems to counter-act — or, at least attempts to — previous postings first published on the left-leaning Slog and Horse’sAss blogs that questioned Reichert’s fitness for office due to a recent brain injury.

And today, the Reichert camp unleashed its latest spot: A guilt-by-association number that pits DelBene and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as one in the same — and invokes the L-word: They’re “down-the-line liberals” who together will steer the nation right into the financial gutter, the ad suggests (Oddly, Reichert purports to be good friends with Pelosi, since his princely recovery of her shoe in 2005. But how’s the old addage go? With friends like that …).

With nearly three more weeks to go til Election Day, it can’t get much muddier — can it?
