Loud crowd in Sequim for only Dicks-Cloud debate

It may have been in a remote corner of the 6th District – Sequim. But that didn’t stop a sizable and lively crowd from turning up for a debate between Congressman Norm Dicks and challenger Doug Cloud. The forum – possibly the only head-to-head meeting between the two – attracted 250-300 and was punctuated by “jeers, clapping and boos” according to reporter Paul Gottlieb of the Peninsula Daily News.

Here’s an account of the exchange.

It was … a day for Dicks, who lives in Belfair, and Cloud, a Tacoma attorney who lives in Gig Harbor, to differ face to face before a lively audience.

With Cloud’s words often cheered and clapped – despite moderator Cathy Claney’s admonition against such demonstrations and her threat to cut the debate short – Cloud said he wanted to “change this country and change the world” and urged dependence more on individual initiative.

“I intend to try to get this country moving again to get out of the habit of looking to sugar daddies in Washington,” he said, frequently referring to Dicks as Norm.

Dicks pointed to his experience as a long-term member of Congress and what that has done for his constituents, and said his clout could grow.

He predicted he would become the chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee if he is re-elected and if his party stays as the House majority.

Dicks told of his work on salmon restoration, said the tear-down of the Elwha River dams – which is to begin next September – will bring needed jobs to the area and criticized Cloud for wanting to shut down the federal departments of Education and Energy, which he said could affect jobs at Battelle Marine Science Lab in Sequim and the generation of new alternative-energy jobs nationwide.

Cloud said vital functions in those agencies could be absorbed by other federal agencies and that his proposal made him the candidate with ideas on how to fight the federal deficit, expected to exceed $1.4 trillion this year.

  1. Speaking of politicians, — and I don’t support any of them — I get a big chuckle when I read the campaign posters that Doug Cloud has littering nearly every highway and street corner ( often saturated with dozens in one spot!) that has his slogan saying “Lets clean house”! Rather ironic considering the LITTER we have to deal with throught these stupid campaigns.

And speaking of campaigns….Am I the only one who is thinking that once we finally begin to recuperate from one election and the garbage and mudslinging that goes along with it, we are inundated with another one! Its getting to be that it seems like it is a perpetual, never ending, revolving door of political sewage assaulting our eyes and ears.

    Snowball’s chance in ……..

Much adu about nothing. Dicks could walk backwards into this one. I honor him just for going to retirement heaven where they actually believe the Republicans will take care of them.

“Get the government out of my medicare”

Douglas Richard “Doug” Cloud (born 1957) is a lawyer and four-time Republican Party candidate for United States House of Representatives in Washington State’s 6th Congressional District (currently held by Norman D. Dicks).

In 2008, he lost against incumbent Norm Dicks in the general election on November 4, 2008, 33% to 67%

People also voted for Obama in ’08, that doesn’t mean they all would vote that way today.

    Does that say enough?

  5. scott0962 says:

So Dicks’ best argument for his re-election was that IF his party stays in the majority (which is by now means certain) he’ll be in a position to send more pork our way?

What better proof that Dicks is part of what’s wrong in the other Washington.

  6. ELPolloLoco says:

If pork is legal, one is a fool not to take it. Prediction: Dicks 62%, Cloud 36%. Other 2%.

  7. cadana1961 says:

The only thing wrong in the other Washington is the Grand Obstructionist Party and the idiots who hold Congress at bay with fearmongering tactics!

    You a betting man?

The demonization of Obama hasn’t worked it’s magic all the way to Dicks.

  9. OldLefty says:

    Concerned:

By the way – put any Republican candidate up against Obama today and guess what?

    Obama wins.

Start with Palin and Obama wins in a landslide.

The point being, why does OUR MONEY have to go to Washington DC (where a goodly amount sticks to a lot of fingers in the pot) before it comes back here to OUR Washington, where we don’t have any control over where it’s spent (earmarks that make Dicks look good), The fact that Dicks, Murry, Cantwell, etal, brag about the ability to bring pork is the exact reason why they should be fired, and conservative leadership brought in.

  11. newshound100 says:

That district was gerrymandered to keep Dicks in power forever . Have you seen the Grays Harbor area ?. It looks like a third world country. Massive unemployment , welfare , drug and alcohol abuse . Well done Dicks..

I have to add my two cents here. I was part of a candidates’ forum last night at Whitman Elementary here in Tacoma. Norm Dicks and Doug Cloud were both there. Before the forum began, I overheard the Cloud folks (I will leave it to you to decide who it was) name-calling and just plain saying rude, mean things about Congressman Dicks. In a school, no less. And where they were easily overheard. I mean, the words used were so immature and classless…well, let’s just say…had I not already made my decision who to vote for already, I did right then.

While I believe that Congressman Dicks has his issues, I would never vote for a young, disrespectful hopeful who staffs his campaign with people who talk this way (or himself talks this way). Above all…isn’t it important to be civil, polite and mature, and rather than attack or name call your opponent, address what YOU PLAN TO DO WHEN YOU ARE ELECTED?

Obviously, this guy never LEFT elementary school!! Not to mention the disrespect to the people HOSTING the event, the teachers, principal, volunteers, kids.

I was further unimpressed with the things Mr. Cloud had to say about education. Clearly, he doesn’t have any kids in South Tacoma school, nor does he know ANYTHING about them.

Have a lovely day! My vote is going to Norm Dicks!

  14. nwcolorist says:

Based on the PMA/Murtha scandal, and now this nepotism thing with his kids on the payroll, Dicks is over the hill. Unless he straightens out, which is possible, it’s the beginning of the end for Norm.

  15. klthompson says:

“Obviously, this guy never LEFT elementary school!!” Doesn’t say much about the school system, law school, or those administering the state Bar Exam does it?.

Nepotism????????? Can you pronounce the name BUSH???????

So what does Dick’s have to do with Weyerhauser folding up shop? Another American institution found profit in outsourcing.

  18. CrazyLibertarian says:

    El Pollo Loco

“If pork is legal, one is a fool not to take it. Prediction: Dicks 62%, Cloud 36%. Other 2%.”

Let me get this straight. Since it is legal, he would be a fool not to dot it? Since everyone else does it, he should also, and we should re-elect him because he is willing to do it….??

Does this whole argument of, since its legal, he might as well do it apply to other areas as well? Smoking 14 cigars a day and chasing it with a fifth of scotch is also legal. Might be some long term problems though. Eating nothing but cupcakes and KFC… also legal, also possibly not the best plan of action. Getting fourteen credit cards, and maxing them out, when your annual salary is 22,000$… perfectly legal, but definitely a recipe for disaster.

Please come up with a better answer as to why we should re-elect this incumbent simply because “He is unethical and foolish, but at least it benefits us (in the short term).”

  19. sunup500 says:

Newshound……Don’t blame Dicks for laziness and indifference. There are no barbed wires and no razor wires or moats keeping anyone in Grays Harbor. If people aren’t ambitious or lack work ethics, they will live in a drug induced stupor and blame others for their poverty. The simple fact is that dropping out of school and laying about crying about your misfortunes won’t change your future. If you live in abject poverty and want to get out, but can’t find work locally, move!! Join the military! They offer an opportunity to climb out of poverty, instill work ethics and self pride. My father did exactly that, and raised a family with three kids. We didn’t have much, but learned much in our travels around the globe. We all grew to be productive people. Kwitcherbellyachin’ and get a job!

  20. ratujack says:

The News Tribune is afraid of Norm Dicks. They knows he is quilty ………TNT you are dis-honest with no integrity or guts. What happened to journalism????????? The Editorial Board is a laughable joke. Endoresed Murray.and the Board run’s and hide’s in the closet when it comes to investigating Norm Dicks. Patrick Ocallahan spell this PMA/Murtha. $160,000 in bribes. 1,000 times on the black board.

  21. The notion that Dicks will be able to do ANYTHING if he is re-elected is just plain stupid. Is there anyone except a dyed-in-the-wool leftist lunatic who thinks that dems are going to stay in the majority in the House? The GOP is going to flip between 100-120 seats. Normal people call this a tsunami.

A vote for Dicks is a vote to end his earmark ability and to force him to sit there and watch. Oh, he’ll be the MINORITY leader or something but he will HAVE NO POWER.

With Doug Cloud, at least our state’s concerns will be heard and heeded. Wake up, sheeple – denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.

Ask Alaska, where they get back all of their money and part of ours. Ask Sarah Palin if she thinks that there should be NO federal taxation.

Of course, she is so ditzy, she’d probably say yes.

  23. OldLefty says:

pgroup – hold on there Babbalouie!!!!!

Patty Murray has been blamed for running up the deficit and now you are telling us that the party in control is the party in control of the purse?

Murray was in the minority for 12 of 18 years.

I guess Dino Rossi is lying to us, huh?

What were you saying about ‘lunatics’??

I’m concerned with the uncivil & strident discourse promulgated by a large number of tea party activists.

Not according to Gov. christy, the rightwing are a group of well behaved lambs that never ever yell or disrupt, interrupt others…never.
You can trust him, he had a microphone and was insulting one of those libs at the time so you know he’s a good guy.

  27. Looking at the predictions I don’t think Norm Dicks has much to worry about, other than the rather nasty tone of political discourse around here.

    http://elections.nytimes.com/2010/house/washington/6

I have also heard Doug Cloud speak and was turned off by his “blame Norm Dicks” answer to everything. I am sure Norm Dicks doesn’t walk on water any more than any other lifelong politician but a candidate needs to have actual ideas of his/her own in order to inspire voters, not just nasty things to say about an opponent.

  28. sunup500 says:

Peegroup………I don’t know what you’ve been inhaling in Dave’s Cloud, but you need medical attention with your hallucinations running rampant. Dicks isn’t my first choice, but he beats the snot out of anything the NeoCons – Neo Fascist right wingers have in store for us. We don’t need another war. We don’t need to privatize social security to be raped by Wall Street barons. We don’t need to continue the path of $5 a gallon gas. We don’t need the rampant disregard for our environment. We don’t need Hali Burton. We don’t need another ENRON. We don’t need medical costs running amok. We don’t need outsourcing of American jobs. These are all trademarks of the Republican party.

  29. I find it curious that oldlefty can sit here and banter this and other subjects all day long. Typically, those with that kind of time on their hands are on the government dole of some kind. Hey lefty, thats my money your living off of.

  30. entrepreneur says:

These Norm Dicks supporter seem to be such cry babies . The King of Pork’s first vote will be to return Queen Nancy to a position of power.
He voted for Obama Care he voted for Cap and Tax. Enough said.

  31. randydutton says:

Get the Dicks out of Government!

He earmarks money to organizations that hire his kids to spend the money.
He wrote the 2008 Energy Act that barred America from tapping 800 billion barrels of recoverable oil in the Rockies.

Dicks uses taxpayer money to subsidize wind energy technology where the key ingredient (rare earth elements) is monopolized by China. And China announced that in 2012 it would force companies needing REEs to manufacture in China. MADE IN CHINA should be Dicks’ slogan.

Dicks is AFRAID of visiting the district. He hasn’t had a townhall in Grays Harbor County in YEARS.

Dicks is ARROGANT in encouraging federal buildings, which he earmarked money towards, to be named after him.

  32. Doesnt matter to me who wins…but what does matter to me are the sign waving idiotic morons who support their favorite politician ( or the politician themselves)

Every silly issue these days has a gaggle of doofuses grinning like loons and waving like maniacs in street corners, distracting people who are already distracted enough while speeding on mental shutdown and autopilot through busy intersections!

Just yesterday I saw what a thinking mind would deem the unthinkable. On a very busy corner the adults had their little signs and three YOUNG kids–maybe 7 or 8– were on their corner waving signs! with NO visible supervision! Its bad enough that these people PROSTITUTE their children to push an agenda or candidate, but its unforgivable that they would put the safety of those kids at risk to do it.

Every sign I see waved at me on a street corner just cost them MY vote.

  33. runner52 says:

Anybody besides me find a lot of similarity between Norm Dicks and John Murtha? Norm Dicks = Murtha West.
