Former lawmaker Bill Fromhold dies from cancer

Bill Fromhold represented a Vancouver-area district from 2001 until 2008 but he was a Tacoma native and graduate of Lincoln Stadium High School and the University of Puget Sound where he received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree.

Here’s the note sent to House members and staff from his wife, Marcia Fromhold:

From Marcia:

Dear friends,

Last evening Bill lost his valiant battle. Just after midnight, with all of us around him, he peacefully passed on from this life His body could no longer battle this awful cancer and he never really came back to us after the surgery. We know his spirit is still strong and watching over us each moment. He was not in pain and did not suffer. As we sat together we had a chance to share with him the touching and funny moments that meant so much to us and to him.

As you know, Bill was truly a remarkable man who influenced the lives of so many people. We are devastated to lose him but feel so fortunate that we had the opportunity to share his life, vitality, guidance and love.

Your thoughts and prayers sustain us still. We will post again with details about a service after we have a chance to make arrangements.

Onward and upward,

Marcia, Kristie and Kelli

I initially had Fromhold as a Lincoln graduate but was corrected by former Tacoma Mayor Bill Baarsma:

“Big Bill Fromhold was a classmate of mine at Stadium. He was one of my few 1960 grad peers who actually took off weight – about 40 pounds I believe – from his high school years. He was the starting tackle on our City League champion Tigers – where you will see his image in the 1960 Stadium yearbook. He had to be one of the biggest players in the state – 6’4″ about 250 pounds I believe. We defeated Lincoln by the way.”

  1. Terrible news. Bill was not just one of the best legislators we’ve had, but an incredibly nice guy.

Besides being native to the area, Bill helped make the recently opened “Bridge to the Beach” a reality. I have puppies mourning the loss of the man who gave them two miles of habitat for crab shells for rolling in…

  3. Peter, are you sure about your high school? I believe Bill was a classmate of Mayor Baarsma’s at Stadium.

  4. jimkingjr says:

My mistake, not Peter’s, and I should have remembered the Baarsma connection…
